Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, 1955

Oil on panel, signed lower right
51 x 41.50 cm

History:
In 1949, Paul Jouve was appointed curator of the Musée d'Ile-de-France in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, following a donation from Baroness Ephrussi de Rothschild, under the direction of the Institut de France. He thus goes there very regularly in order to fulfil his mission of conserving the collections that had to be moved during the war and restoring the gardens. In particular, he is working to make the site better known to the public, for example by designing the poster to promote the reopening of the site, praising its

"magnificent gardens" and its "superb collections". The villa's lush gardens, set against a mountainous background as this work shows, were probably reminiscent of the Mediterranean vegetation around Villa Abd-el-Tif, of which he was the first resident in his youth.
