Chimpanzé et statue Baoulé, 1931

Etching on parchment, signed and justified « bon à tirer sur parchemin » (reading for printing) lower left. Of the rare luxury prints on parchment.
43 x 54 cm

History:
This print on parchment, is one of the ten subjects chosen for inclusion in the album published by Editions Apollo for the Weill Gallery in 1931. From this portfolio were printed one hundred copies numbered from 1 to 100 as well as eleven luxury albums on Japan paper numbered from I to XI.

The artist reserved a few luxury copies on parchment for each of the subjects. Some of these albums were nested in a studded leather box made by Hermès house and decorated with an etching of the artist (using a model of a door hammer carved from his creation), one of which is on display in this exhibition. This model is a rework of an older composition from 1912, of which we present a leather version, with some variations in the detail of the models.
