A marseillaise retrospective

This summer 2018, going a little beyond its usual framework, the gallery wished to pay a modest tribute to the Marseille César. At a time when the landmark retrospective of the Center Pompidou commemorating the twenty years of his death has just ended, a new avenue seems to be opening up for the reception of his work. From June 1 to July 12, 2018, this Marseille retrospective retraces the career and life of one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century, child of the Belle-de-Mai.

In this interview, Giulia Pentcheff exposes the importance and the role of scrap metal in the development of the artist's work, his discovery of the hydraulic press and reviews the realization of his first compressions. Focusing on the representation of artists who have worked in the south of France, it was natural for the gallery to pay tribute to this Marseille genius of modern and contemporary sculpture.
