History, according to Roger Passeron:
"This sculpture was integrated into a set constituting the furnishing of a room. Set whose parts were created by different artists. Thus Max Ernst realized a bed-cage and its screen and André Masson this floor lamp.
The bed-cage of Max Ernst has for dimensions: height 222 cm, width 247 cm, length 261 cm. His screen is 186 cm high and 166 cm wide in three parts. The cage-bed is decorated with two round mirrors on the back of which are two lithographs by Max Ernst who also made a hand-carved green tree branch whose leaves resemble figs and which extends over the entire vertical front of the bed.
André Masson made numerous study sketches for this floor lamp. He originally intended to make a coat rack rather than a floor lamp.
This is the last sculpture created by André Masson. Commissioned by Tchou, it would have been distributed by the Société Modarco (banking group) which distributed Max Ernst's beds."
